Our Mission

Our mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives all we do. The need for our work is beyond question. Heart disease and blood vessel diseases are America's No. 1 killer. The urgency of our mission demands bold action, for every 33 seconds these diseases claim another victim. Saving and improving human lives is extraordinary work and demands a passionate commitment. The health of millions rests upon our shoulders.

What We Do

To achieve our mission, we:

Our Organization

The American Heart Association was founded in 1924 and is the oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting cardiovascular diseases and stroke. These diseases claim more lives than the next seven causes of death combined.

Our headquarters is in Dallas, Texas. We have 14 regional affiliates and hundreds of local offices in communities throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

We are a leading authority on cardiovascular disease, and our conferences, journals and other information have earned a worldwide reputation for scientific excellence. Last year we spent more than $300 million on research, public and professional education, and community service programs. In the last 12 years we've funded more than $1 billion in cardiovascular research, a commitment second only to that of the federal government. American Heart Association funded research has lead to such discoveries as CPR, bypass surgery, pacemakers, artificial heart valves, microsurgery, life-extending drugs, and new surgical techniques to repair heart defects. Three Nobel Prizes have been won by researchers whose work was funded by the American Heart Association.
