The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University is an academic center whose mission is to enhance the impact of foundations and nonprofit organizations, improve the quality of community decision-making, and develop the habit of civic engagement.

The Johnson Center's current work includes:

  • Community Research Institute

    The Institute helps organizations understand the evolving needs of the community, document these needs, and measure the success of their various programs. CRI employs social researchers and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) urban planning specialists.

  • Nonprofit Leadership Institute

    The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation Nonprofit Leadership Institute (NLI) promotes good practice in the nonprofit sector by providing support, education, and information to leaders of nonprofit organizations.

  • Arizona-Indiana-Michigan Alliance

    The Arizona-Indiana-Michigan (AIM) Alliance is a strategic collegial collaboration of the Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation at Arizona State University (A), the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University (I), and the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University (M). The AIM Alliance grew organically through the commitment of three academic centers to address the needs of an evolving nonprofit sector.

  • The Grantmaking School

    The Grantmaking School (TGS) offers the first university-based program for teaching the techniques and ethics of advanced grantmaking specifically to foundation grantmaking professionals. The curriculum for TGS is crafted to meet the practical needs of experienced grantmakers on topics such as strategic grantmaking, due diligence, ethics, and accountability.

  • Foundation Review

    The Foundation Review is a national juried journal designed to share evaluation results and lessons learned from evaluations of grants made by foundations. The journal is scheduled to launch in January.

  • Frey Chair in Family Philanthropy

    The Frey Chair in Family Philanthropy is a new endowed chair. The Chair will focus on research, scholarship, and teaching and will work with family foundations.

  • Since its establishment, the Johnson Center has grown and evolved to serve the ever-changing needs of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors and to prepare its students for careers of service.
