Yale University, A Tradition of Excellence

A History Of Solid Progress.
Yale University was founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School in the home of Abraham Pierson, its first rector, in Killingworth, Connecticut. In 1716 the school moved to New Haven and, with the generous gift by Elihu Yale of nine bales of goods, 417 books, and a portrait and arms of King George I, was renamed Yale College in 1718. From that point on, we never looked back, with significant expansion including:
  • Medical Institution, 1810
  • Divinity School, 1822
  • Law School, 1843
  • Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, 1847
  • School of Fine Arts, 1869
  • School of Music, 1894

In 1887 Yale College became Yale University and we continued to add to our academic offerings:
  • School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, 1900
  • School of Nursing, 1923
  • School of Drama, 1955
  • School of Architecture, 1972
  • School of Management, 1974

Location, Location, Location.
Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Yale University's campus is within easy reach of a variety of settings. New York City is only 90 minutes away by car or train. Boston is an easy 3 hour drive or even shorter train ride. Historical New Haven, overlooking Long Island Sound, is the hub of a 17 city and town residential community that boasts beautiful beaches, quiet forested areas and exciting cosmopolitan opportunities.

A Living Working Culture.
Yale University is an exciting work environment for everyone, whether teaching, conducting research, administering clinical care, or providing vital support toward those ends. While we've graduated many government leaders, Pulitzer or Nobel prize winners, and movie stars, we're also an incredibly diverse international community of accountants, computer specialists, nurses, lab technicians, administrative assistants, and a host of other talented professionals who enjoy a career with a world-class institution along with the opportunity to make it even greater.

World-Class Facilities.
With over 210 buildings on 2,000 acres, your work at Yale could take you anywhere from a modern high-rise to the dorm where Nathan Hale slept.

Wherever you work, information technology is state of the art, with the recent implementation of a fully integrated suite of Oracle-based administrative systems for financial analysis and reporting and for human resource/payroll systems. Additionally, we have built a sophisticated technical network, including several types of servers, and web technology to support the new software. With the exception of some service positions, virtually all staff positions at Yale require solid computer literacy.

Superior Recreational Facilities.
Recreational facilities at Yale, available for staff and faculty use, make any corporate exercise room or club membership pale by comparison. As an employee, you can join the largest gym in the country, where you'll find newly refurbished exercise and weight rooms, fencing and polo, to name a few. You can golf at reduced daily rates on a course ranked 69th in the country by Golf Magazine or play tennis on one of our 22 recently reconditioned courts (four of them indoors). Or how about sailing at our yacht club, or camping out in one of our cabins in the forests of central Connecticut?

Excellent Benefits.
Ours comprise one of the best programs in the country, including a wide array of insurance choices, liberal paid time off, fantastic family and education benefits, a rich selection of tax and retirement benefits, and much more. See the Staff Benefits links.

Learning Opportunities.
Yale University's core mission is to advance, disseminate, and preserve knowledge. The Organizational Development and Learning Center supports this mission by improving the capabilities of the administrative staff and the University as a whole. We create learning opportunities, and we guide the members of our staff in improving organizational performance. Our plan is that Yale will continue to be a civil, effective, and innovative community in which to teach, learn, and work. The Learning Center fosters and promotes essential core values including:
