The Chronicle’s 23rd annual ranking of America’s biggest donors features a number of donors making their Philanthropy 50 debut, including Edward Avedisian, a professional clarinetist with the Boston Pops, and Tilman Fertitta, the world’s richest restauranteur. Two of Airbnb’s co-founders gave to help Ukrainian refugees, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates took the top spot by giving $5.1 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation last year. Altogether, the donors on the list contributed $16 billion.
