$104-Million Gift from Saudi King Restores Syria Food Aid

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has donated $104-million to bolster food assistance for millions of refugees from Syria, Somalia, and South Sudan as winter approaches, writes the Associated Press. The gift came after the United Nations' World Food Program said last week that it would have to cut food vouchers to Syrian refugees as humanitarian crises around the world stretched its resources.

The royal donation puts the UN well past a $64-million fundraising goal for the voucher program. A social-media campaign launched after the World Food Program's warning brought in more than $1-million from the public.
