2-Year Process Produced Diller-von Furstenberg Park Plan

The New York Times details the history of plans for a $130 million park and culture venue on a new Hudson River pier that will be financed largely by entertainment mogul Barry Diller and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. The couple's foundation has committed $113 million for Pier 55, which was announced in November, two years after Mr. Diller unveiled design plans to top officials of the Hudson River Park Trust.

Planning and discussion for the park were conducted largely in secret, with many Hudson River Park supporters and city leaders kept in the dark even as the trust pursued legislation to make way for the new structure to replace the decaying Pier 54 on Manhattan's west side. While the plan quickly won praise from City Hall, it has drawn criticism from some community leaders, who say Pier 55 was essentially presented as a fait accompli and is being built at the expense of other park improvements.
