$20-Million Annenberg Gift Buoys Ocean Sustainability Effort

The Annenberg Foundation has pledged to match the next $20-million in donations to AltaSea, a public-private project to develop a business and research hub at the Port of Los Angeles focused on generating solutions for marine sustainability, City News Service writes. The challenge gift announced Wednesday would add to $26.5-million the foundation has already contributed toward AltaSea's $160-million goal for private funding.

In a statement, the foundation said AltaSea would be the "only urban, ocean-based ideas and innovation center in the world" and would generate jobs and economic activity at the world's busiest port. Chairwoman and CEO Wallis Annenberg dedicated the donation to Leonard J. Aube, the foundation's longtime executive director and a champion of AltaSea.
