Northwestern University announced a $25-million gift Tuesday from alumni Patrick and Shirley Ryan, with much of the money devoted to expanding the ranks of the college's endowed professors, campus newspaper The Daily Northwestern reports.
Of the gift, $10 million will support the Ryan Family Chair Challenge, which will match other contributions toward establishing endowed positions at the Evanston, Ill., campus in several disciplines, including biomedical sciences, media, and global health. The remaining $15 million has yet to be designated.
Mr. Ryan served for more than 40 years as executive chairman of the Aon, an international risk-management and insurance firm, and is a member and past chairman of the Northwestern board of trustees, according to a university statement. He and his wife have now donated nearly $200 million in total to Northwestern.
