$50-Million Donation Boosts Brown U. Public-Affairs Program

Brown University announced a $50-million gift Monday to expand the Rhode Island campus's Thomas J. Watson Jr. Institute for International and Public Affairs, the Providence Journal reports. The contribution by a consortium of donors will be used to hire new faculty, bringing the institute's roster to about 30 professors, and to support construction of a new, 20,000-square-foot building to accommodate the program's growth.

The donors are financier and Brown Chancellor Thomas Tisch and his wife, Alice Tisch; Stephen Robert, former chairman and CEO of investment bank Oppenheimer & Co. and the university's chancellor emeritus; and the Thomas J. and Olive C. Watson Jr. Foundation.
