$50-Million Gift to Back Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke U.

A Texas couple has donated $50-million to Duke University to expand its programs fostering collaboration across academic disciplines to tackle societal problems, reports Raleigh-Durham, N.C., television station WRAL.

The gift from Anne and Robert Bass of Fort Worth will establish Bass Connections, an effort to link students and faculty across all 10 Duke schools and bring varied perspectives and expertise to bear on energy, global health, and other complex issues. Half of the money will be used in a matching program to encourage other donors.

Ms. Bass is a Duke trustee and co-chair of the school's current $3.25-billion fundraising campaign.
