$75 Million Gift Builds Endowment for U. of Texas Hospital

The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston announced a $75 million donation Monday from the John P. McGovern Foundation, the Houston Chronicle reports. The academic health center will rename its medical school the John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School in honor of the gift, which comes in the form of an endowment to fund scholarships, faculty chairs, and research.

The foundation was created in the 1960s by Dr. John McGovern, a Houston pediatrician, allergist, immunologist, and educator who died in 2007. The new money will also support the medical school's McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics, established through an earlier gift from the foundation.
