Affordable Housing Reportedly on Chan-Zuckerberg Agenda

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s philanthropy organization is laying the groundwork to address a Bay Area housing crisis many in the region attribute to the influx of Silicon Valley wealth, Endgadget writes, citing reporting by another tech-news site, The Information.

Representatives of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the social-good venture launched late last year by the Facebook CEO and his physician wife, have begun meeting in recent weeks with experts from local governments, academia, and real estate to discuss ways to address the region’s skyrocketing housing costs. People involved in the talks described the limited-liability company’s interest as serious but still in the early, exploratory phase.

A Facebook proposal submitted last week to buy additional office space next to its Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters included an offer to invest $7.8 million in affordable housing in the area, according to Endgadget.
