Facing a budget squeeze, the Sacramento Philharmonic and the Sacramento Opera have opted not to stage any performances this fall, reports The Sacramento Bee.
The Sacramento Region Performing Arts Alliance, formed last year by a merger of the two recession-battered arts groups, canceled the fall seasons to focus on developing a sustainable financial plan for the companies, said Laurie Nelson, the alliance's president.
The groups have failed to meet fundraising goals and flirted with closure in recent years. "We could have done another season, like we did last year, and struggle along and end up the year with no money in the bank," Ms. Nelson said. "Instead, we decided to take a pause and really give some consideration to how to build a foundation for the future.”
