AmeriCorps Vista Members Working Without Pay During Shutdown

Under the federal government shutdown, AmeriCorps Vista workers must continue to do their jobs without compensation, reports The Nation.

On Monday night, the Corporation for National and Community Service sent  an e-mail to Vista members stating that they would be required to work during the shutdown but would only be paid once the government budget is passed. It then closed its Web site and offices in response to the shutdown.

Already subject to long work hours and meager pay during their year of national service, Vista members are also not allowed to hold a second job, which has left some members with little money for food and rent.
