Antiabortion activists released an undercover video Tuesday showing a Planned Parenthood official graphically discussing how to preserve an aborted fetus's organs for medical research and the costs associated with providing the tissue to scientists, The Washington Post reports.
The Center for Medical Progress, which recorded the video at a Los Angeles restaurant, alleges it shows that Planned Parenthood is illegally selling fetal organs, which the women's health nonprofit denied.
Meeting with two activists posing at representatives of a biotech firm, Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood’s senior director of medical research, is seen talking about the group's work donating fetal tissue. Pressed on whether Planned Parenthood clinics charge for the organs, Ms. Nucatola says the organization only seeks repayment from research centers for costs such as shipping the tissue.
Buying or selling human fetal tissue is prohibited in the United States, but donating fetal organs for research is legal with a woman's consent. A Planned Parenthood spokesman said the organization's clinics donate fetal tissue for stem-cell research with a patient's request and do not profit from the transaction.
