Atlantic Philanthropies Gives $24-Million to Belfast University

Queen's University Belfast has received $24-million from Atlantic Philanthropies to develop a state-of-the-art center for experimental medicine in the Northern Ireland capital, the BBC reports. The gift from retail billionaire Charles Feeney's foundation is the largest ever to the institution.

The university has secured another $27-million from other sources for the center, which will specialize in research aimed at finding treatments for diabetes, genetic illnesses, and eye disease. The center is scheduled to open in 2016.
