Belo Foundation Commits $30 Million for Dallas Parks

The Belo Foundation announced a $70-million plan Thursday to expand green space in downtown Dallas, with the philanthropy pledging $30 million for effort, The Dallas Morning News and WFAA television report.

The $30-million commitment represents nearly all the assets of the foundation, which will reconstitute as Parks for Downtown Dallas and focus on the blueprint to construct four parks totaling 17 acres over the next decade. The refashioned group will seek to raise another $5 million to implement the plan, with the city responsible for matching the $35-million total contribution.

Before retooling, the Belo Foundation, formerly the charitable arm of the Morning News and WFAA, made two final grants totaling $2 million to support journalism programs at the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University.
