A San Diego husband and wife who founded a nonprofit to train wounded veterans for careers in filmmaking were found guilty Friday of draining hundreds of thousands of dollars from the taxpayer-funded organization's coffers, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
A federal jury convicted Wounded Marine Careers Foundation directors Judith Paixao, 61, and Kevin Lombard, 64, of conspiracy, theft, and making false claims.
Prosecutors said Ms. Paixao and Mr. Lombard, both of whom had film and television experience, defrauded the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs by submitting false claims for training and equipment they never provided. They put $200,000 of their own money into the foundation but took $400,000 from its accounts from 2007 to 2009, with more than $100,000 going toward family bills and vacations, authorities said. Sentencing is scheduled for October 19.
