Georgetown University announced a $50 million pledge Tuesday to fund both on-field facilities and off-field support for the school's athletes, writes The Washington Post. A portion of the gift from Peter and Susan Cooper of Newport Beach, Calif., will expand a relatively new Georgetown program aimed at arming student athletes with leadership and decision-making skills.
An initial installment of $15 million includes $5 million for the leadership program and $10 million for upgrades to the campus's Multi-Sport Field, which will be renamed Cooper Field when the enhancements are completed. Mr. Cooper founded Cooper and Company, a real-estate and investment firm, and served two terms on Georgetown's Board of Directors. All five of the couple's children graduated from the university, and four participated in intercollegiate sports.
