Classical Music Critic Spearheads Effort to Spotlight American Music

A Chicago-based classical-music critic is leading efforts to form a foundation that will support performances of American music, The New York Times reports.

Lawrence A. Johnson, founder of the Classical Review, a family of websites with editions in Chicago, Boston, New York, and Florida, had long complained that musical organization weren't performing enough American music. He spent the last several months assembling support for the American Music Project.

The foundation has made its first commission, a piano quintet by the Chicago pianist and composer Amy Wurtz. The plan is for each commission to include a recording and performances in three cities. The foundation will also offer grants to musical organizations and performers to incorporate America works into their presentations during the 2015-16 seasons.
