Here are notable new grant awards specifically for the Covid-19 outbreak, compiled by The Chronicle:
Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations
$384 million to Novovax to advance clinical trials and expand manufacturing capacity for its most promising coronavirus-vaccine candidate. Novovax previously received $4 million in March from this group to support clinical development of its vaccine for Covid-19. The coalition was created by a collection of government, private, philanthropic, and civil-society organizations at the Davos forum in 2017.
Genentech and the Genentech Foundation
$42 million commitment to address both urgent needs and the long-term impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on health, schools, and grass-roots community groups in the United States, primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. Recipients of emergency grants include Direct Relief and the CDC Foundation, as well as the Silicon Valley Community Foundation Regional Response Fund, San Mateo County Strong Fund, Oregon Community Recovery Fund, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside.
Lilly Endowment
$15.7 million to Early Learning Indiana to create the Come Back Stronger Fund, which will make grants to child-care providers and offset new expenses so that they may safely operate during the Covid-19 pandemic.
eBay Foundation
$15 million to a group of local, national, and international organizations that includes Kiva, the World Health Organization, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Start Small Think Big, and ICA Fund Good Jobs. Part of the commitment will also support Global Give, eBay’s annual grant-making program to support small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Apple
$10 million to Copan Diagnostics to expand its manufacturing of sample-collection kits that can rapidly test for the novel coronavirus.
Chicago Community Covid-19 Respond Fund
$9.5 million across 194 grants to organizations in the Chicago area that are addressing the pandemic’s health and financial crises. This was the fund’s third round of grant making, with money raised by the Chicago Community Trust and United Way of Metro Chicago, with support from the Allstate Foundation, Baxter International Foundation, CDW, Hightower Advisors, Madison Dearborn Partners, and Target.
Heinz Endowments
$6.4 million over 18 grants to organizations in the Pittsburgh area to relieve economic hardship for families and individuals during the pandemic and improve health protections for residents, essential workers, and medical staff. Among the grants is $775,000 to the Southwest Pennsylvania Environmental Health Project to promote protective policies in public health.
BeyGood
$6 million to offer mental-wellness services related to the pandemic for communities of color in Houston, New York, New Orleans, and Detroit through the University of California at Los Angeles and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The singer Beyoncé Knowles started BeyGood to raise money for charitable causes.
Greater Cleveland Covid-19 Rapid Response Fund
$4.7 million to 85 nonprofit groups and organizations that are working to stabilize food and shelter, secure personal protective equipment for first responders, and support vulnerable populations in Ohio. The fund has so far raised $8.5 million from 73 corporate, foundation, and individual donors.
Community Foundation of Sarasota County
$4.5 million to support community needs at Florida nonprofit groups working to address the immediate, short-term, and longer-term needs as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Kresge Foundation
$4.2 million in a second round of funding to support nonprofit groups across the United States. Among the grants was $500,000 to PolicyLink to expand the Convergence Partnership’s efforts to address the structural and institutional obstacles to health and well-being that marginalized communities are facing during the pandemic.
Bayer Fund
$4 million in grants to 250 nonprofit organizations throughout the United States in its focus areas of food and nutrition, STEM education, health and wellness, and community development.
HSBC Bank USA
$4 million in its Covid-19 grant making, including $2 million to Feeding America to mitigate food insecurity and demand on food banks as a result of the pandemic. The bank also gave donations to the American Red Cross and the Center for an Urban Future.
Karya Kares Foundation
$4 million in rental assistance to people who have lost their jobs because of the pandemic. The philanthropic arm of the Karya Property Management company also granted $100,000 to Houston’s Police Department, $100,000 for firefighters in the city, and $100,000 for the Harris County Sheriff’s Department for its drive to pay for personal protection equipment for first responders.
Duke Endowment
$3.5 million to Feeding the Carolinas, a network of 10 food banks in North Carolina and South Carolina, to respond to increased demand as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Henry Luce Foundation
$3.1 million in 23 emergency grants, focusing on providing salary or general operating support at museums and cultural organizations, aiding Native Americans and other vulnerable communities, and supporting higher education and research institutions. Among the grants is $250,000 to the American Indian College Fund to continue instruction remotely during the pandemic at tribal colleges.
Northwest Area Foundation
$2.6 million through 34 grants, many of which respond to needs stemming from the Covid-19 crisis among Native Americans, communities of color, immigrants and refugees, and people in rural areas. The grantees include the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation’s Minnesota Disaster Recovery Fund; Headwaters Foundation for Justice’s Communities First Fund; the Seattle Foundation’s Covid-19 Response Fund; and the Idaho Community Foundation for the Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund for Idaho, which it started with the United Ways of Idaho and the Idaho Nonprofit Center.
Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation
$2.5 million in Project Innovation grants to 69 organizations in 11 areas that are creatively addressing everyday problems and urgent Covid-19 needs in their communities.
John and Mary Tu Foundation
$2.5 million to the University of California at Irvine to care for Covid-19 patients at UCI Health and advance clinical and translational research to test for and treat the viral infection.
Center for Disaster Philanthropy
$2.4 million in its fourth round of grant making from its Covid-19 Response Fund. Among the grantees are the ActionAid and the Feminist Humanitarian Network, which will share $500,000 for their response to the pandemic in Liberia, Bangladesh, Colombia, Zimbabwe, and Somaliland.
Visa Foundation
$2 million in Covid-19 relief grants in the United States and Canada, shared among Feeding America, Food Banks Canada, American Red Cross, Direct Relief, and Children’s Aid.
Episcopal Health Foundation
$1.6 million in its first round of rapid-response grants to 23 nonprofit clinics and other frontline organizations that are serving at-risk communities in Texas during the Covid-19 health crisis.
George Foundation
$1.3 million to 71 nonprofit organizations that serve residents of Texas’s Fort Bend County who have been affected the most by the pandemic.
ADT
$1 million to help more than 100 nonprofits in 44 states and Puerto Rico that have been hit hard by the pandemic.
Kessler Foundation
$1 million in Covid-19 emergency grants for nonprofit groups that serve people with disabilities in New Jersey.
Harold W. McGraw Jr. Family Foundation
$1 million challenge pledge to Norwalk Hospital to support its current Covid-19 care efforts and emergency preparedness. The foundation is matching community donations dollar for dollar through September or up to $1 million.
Roddenberry Foundation
$1 million pledge to Gladstone Institutes for the President’s Coronavirus Research Fund for its virologists’ research on Covid-19.
Tito’s Handmade Vodka
$1 million to the Baylor College of Medicine to resume research and development of a vaccine for SARS, a virus closely related to the novel coronavirus. The grant comes through the vodka company’s philanthropic arm Love, Titos.

$35 million commitment over three years to Our Vision for the Future of Workers and Work, a new effort to build a resilient, inclusive, and equitable economy.
John Templeton Foundation
$3.9 million to Villanova University’s College of Arts and Sciences for interdisciplinary research on the theology of human nature and scientific approaches to humanity.
Ford Foundation
$1 million to the Apollo Theater Foundation for a campaign to renovate the Apollo Performing Arts Center, expand its educational programs, and provide artistic opportunities throughout the Harlem community in New York.
