College Fundraisers Predict Return to Pre-2008 Giving Levels

Giving to colleges and universities increased by 5.5 percent last year, and development officials predict a 5.8 percent bump in donations in 2013, The Chronicle of Higher Education writes, citing the latest survey by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

"The recession continues to recede," said John Lippincott, president of CASE, which polls college fundraisers twice a year to assess giving trends. He said the new results, announced Monday, signal a return to donation levels from 2007-8, the last academic year, which saw a record $31.6-billion given for higher education.

Community colleges saw the biggest gains, with fundraisers reporting a 7 percent spike in giving to two-year schools in 2012 and predicting a 6.8-percent increase this year.
