America’s Biggest Donors Give Unusually Large Share of Gifts to Colleges

Phil and Penny Knight gave $500 million to the University of Oregon last year – and $400 million to Stanford. Altogether, almost half of Philanthropy 50 contributions in 2016 went to colleges and universities.

During an election year soaked in populism, some of America’s biggest philanthropists bestowed an unusually large chunk of their charity on colleges and universities, including several elite institutions.
