Correction: N.Y. Charity Ridgewood Bushwick Did Not Get State Grant

The Wall Street Journal has retracted a March 25 article, which was summarized in the March 26 edition of Philanthropy Today, about the the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council, a nonprofit Brooklyn social-service agency.

The original Journal article incorrectly reported that the charity, whose finances have been the subject of city, state, and federal inquiries, was slated to receive a new $1.9-million “member item” grant—an earmark anonymously inserted into the New York State budget by a legislator. The grant in question was in fact made in 1994, and there are no funds for the council in the latest state budget deal.

The Philanthropy Today item based on the erroneous article has been removed from the Chronicle of Philanthropy archive.
