Dole Head Pledges $15-Million a Year to N.C. Research Center

Billionaire David Murdock, chairman of Dole Food, said Tuesday that he will make an annual $15-million gift "in perpetuity" to support a center for nutrition science he founded in Kannapolis, N.C., writes the Charlotte Observer. The yearly endowed donation will help maintain the North Carolina Research Campus, where researchers from universities and food companies study issues related to health and diet.

A devotee of healthy eating who says a diet of fruits, vegetables, and nuts keeps him in top physical condition at age 91, Mr. Murdock opened the research complex in 2008 and invested $800-million of his fortune into the facility. He said the yearly commitment will solidify the finances of the David H. Murdock Research Institute, the core laboratory on the campus.
