Elsie Hillman, Pa. Philanthropist and GOP Backer, Dies

Elsie Hillman, a Pennsylvania philanthropist who helped advocate for and support moderate Republican politicians, died last week at age 89, The Washington Post reports.

Ms. Hillman, the wife of billionaire industrialist Henry Hillman, chaired the Elsie G. Hillman Foundation and was a trustee of the Hillman Family Foundations. In addition to backing politicians like George H. W. Bush, former vice president Nelson A. Rockefeller, and former U.S. senator Arlen Specter, she also supported Pittsburgh’s public television station and symphony orchestra, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
