Experts Question Ethics of Breitbart Editor’s Fundraising

Breitbart News editor and conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos raised at least $100,000 for scholarships to benefit poor, white men in an unethical and “possibly illegal” way, according to The Daily Beast.

Mr. Yiannopoulos announced the "Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant" in January, stating he would award scholarships this summer exclusively to white men so they can compete with "female, queer, and ethnic-minority classmates." While he told The Daily Beast that he has raised between $100,000 to $250,000 to date, Mr. Yiannopoulos has neither distributed any of the the money nor established a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for the fund. He said the money is still sitting in his bank account.

Making solicitations before establishing a nonprofit or finding another charity to oversee funds violates some state and federal laws against fraudulent solicitations, experts in nonprofit law told the news website. Mr. Yiannopoulos said the “flurry of interest” in the fund and his “skyrocketing media profile” left his team behind on logistics. He said his lawyers are filing paperwork to establish a charity.
