Federal Earmarks Benefit Charities With Ties to Boston Congressman's Wife

A Massachusetts congressman has steered more than $1.6-million in federal grants to nonprofit organizations with ties to his wife, writes The Boston Globe.

The newspaper says the earmarks, arranged by Democrat Stephen F. Lynch, benefited substance-abuse services at the South Boston Community Health Center, at which his wife, Margaret, is the head of marketing and development, and the Gavin Foundation, a residential treatment program on whose board Ms. Lynch serves. Mr. Lynch, who has not obtained federal funds for any other treatment facilities in his Boston-area district, is seeking an additional $540,000 for the two charities this year.

Mr. Lynch said his wife has not benefited financially from the earmarks and that he received both verbal and written clearance for them from the House Committee on Standards and Official Conduct.
