Giving Circles Widen Funding to Underserved Asian-American Communities

An article in the Los Angeles Times explores the role of Giving Circles in Asian-American communities, a demographic group often bypassed by traditional sources of philanthropy.

According to a 2007 study commissioned by Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy, less than 1 percent of all mainstream foundation funding in the United States goes to Asian-American groups.

The giving circles, which pool funds from individual donors who collectively decide what projects to support, often partner with registered charities to help distribute the grant funds. The founder of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Islander Giving Circle says the groups offer a way to engage the next generation of donors and encourage successful Asian-Americans to give back to the community.
