Hendrix College in Ark. Receives $26-Million Bequest

Hendrix College, a private liberal-arts institution in Conway, Ark., announced a $26-million gift Wednesday from the estate of a Little Rock oil executive, Arkansas Business reports.

The 125-year-old college said it will use the bequest from Mary Ann Dawkins to support scholarship programs and kick off fundraising for a new campus welcome center, which will be named for the donor and her late husband.

Ms. Dawkins, who died in December, spent 41 years with Coulson Oil Co., a firm founded by her parents, serving as corporate secretary and holding a seat on the company's board of directors. The school said her relationship with Hendrix dates to 1986, when she attended a candlelight performance by the college choir at a Little Rock United Methodist church.
