Hunt Foundation Gives $25 Million for Texas Tech Dental School

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso announced a $25 million gift Tuesday from the Hunt Family Foundation to help build Texas’s first new school of dentistry in 40 years, the El Paso Times writes.

The Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine aims to address a critical shortage of oral health care in West Texas. El Paso has about 20 dentists per 100,000 residents, far below the state average, and the nearest dental school is hundreds of miles away in Phoenix.

Mr. Hunt is the executive chairman of the Hunt Companies, a real-estate and financial-services holding company headquartered in El Paso. His family fund has been a major benefactor of the Health Sciences Center, giving $10 million in 2010 to establish a nursing school, among other donations.
