La. Flood Donations Via Tech Giants Go Only to Red Cross

ProPublica reports on major technology and other companies whose fundraising on behalf of Louisiana flood victims goes exclusively through the American Red Cross.

Apple, Amazon, and T-Mobile are offering users Louisiana donation opportunities through various web and mobile platforms. Flood-relief contributions made through Wells Fargo and U.S. Bank ATMs also go to the Red Cross, which has drawn local criticism for its Louisiana efforts and has been the subject of media and Congressional scrutiny for its response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake and recent U.S. disasters.

In a statement, T-Mobile said it works with the Red Cross “because they are trusted and they’re able to provide timely emergency relief around the globe.” Doug White, former director of the nonprofit-management program at Columbia University, said the exclusive fundraising relationships problematic because they “promote the idea that the Red Cross is America’s charity and the go-to place for disasters despite its history of fumbles.”
