Largest Presbyterian Denomination Approves Same-Sex Marriage

The vote of the largest Presbyterian denomination — it has about 1.8-million members — comes after three decades of debate. A 2011 decision to ordain gays and lesbians as church leaders led to departures of more conservative members, The New York Times reports.

Tuesday’s majority vote of the church’s regional bodies expands the definition from being between “a man and a woman” to “two people, traditionally a man and a woman.” The change was recommended last year by the church’s General Assembly.
