Linsey McGoey Discusses the Perils of 'Philanthrocapitalism'

Author and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation critic Linsey McGoey talks to left-wing magazine In These Times about her examination of modern-day mega-philanthropy and the market-based approach to achieving social ends.

Ms. McGoey discusses the precepts of her book No Such Thing as a Free Gift: the Gates Foundation and the Price of Philanthropy, the rise of "philanthrocapitalism" in areas such as education and global health, and her argument that giving by today's moguls — like that of wealthy antecedents such as the Carnegies and Rockefellers — entrenches rather than addresses inequality.

Read a Chronicle of Philanthropy roundup of notable philanthropy books of 2015, including No Such Thing as a Free Gift, and a Chronicle opinion column by Linsey McGoey on the nexus of money, power, and giving.
