Mich. Family Behind Amway Has Given Away $1.2 Billion

The Grand Rapids Press offers the first detailed look at the philanthropy of Rich DeVos, the billionaire co-founder of the Amway direct-retail empire, and his family, who have donated $1.2 billion over the years.

The Grand Rapids, Mich., family recently lifted longstanding restrictions on public discussion of giving by the  foundations led by Mr. DeVos and his wife, Helen, and their four children. The organizations reported the lifetime-donation figure last fall to Forbes, which had long sought more information on the family's giving.

Utilizing information from the foundations and tax filings, the Grand Rapids Press summarizes the DeVoses' chief philanthropic strategies and causes, with education accounting for about half their giving and some two-thirds of their $90 million-plus in annual grants benefiting groups in western Michigan.
