Museums Embrace — or Discourage — Digital Tools

Cellphones can distract museum visitors from exhibitions, so some museums are trying to turn mobile devices into tools for learning, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The Broad, a contemporary art museum in Los Angeles, among others, have created mobile applications that provide information based on where in the museum visitors are.

But leaders at other museums worry about encouraging people to view artwork and historical objects through screens. Alternatives they’ve devised include installing interactive art pieces and bulking up their websites with information about their collections that visitors can access later.
