Nonprofit Associated With McCain Got $1 Million Saudi Gift

A nonprofit policy center with ties to Sen. John McCain received a $1 million donation in 2014 from the government of Saudi Arabia, Bloomberg reports, citing the group's federal tax filings. The Arizona Republican's role with the Arizona State University-based McCain Institute for International Leadership is honorary, but he has appeared at its fundraising events, and his Senate campaign fundraiser is listed on tax returns as the institute's contact person.

Craig Holman, government-affairs lobbyist for watchdog organization Public Citizen, said Riyadh's support of the McCain Institute may reflect a trend exacerbated by the Clinton Foundation's controversial fundraising from governments abroad. He said such donations are a way for foreign governments, which are prohibited by law from contributing directly to U.S. political campaigns, to seek influence with elected officials.
