Ole Miss Alumnus Gives $25 Million for Sports and Scholarships

The University of Mississippi has received a $25 million donation from surgeon and entrepreneur Gerald "Doc" Hollingsworth to support campus athletics, the Sun Herald of Biloxi writes. The contribution includes $10 million in cash and a $15 million charitable remainder trust to establish the Gerald M. Hollingsworth, M.D., Athletic Scholarship Endowment.

A Mississippi native who now lives in Niceville, Fla., Dr. Hollingsworth graduated from Ole Miss in 1953 with a degree in chemical engineering and attended the university's medical school for two years before completing his studies at Harvard. The football field at the university's Vaught-Hemingway Stadium is named for Dr. Hollingsworth in honor of a $3 million gift in 1998 to help fund a stadium expansion.
