Online Drives Take Off for Teachers Buying School Supplies

Teachers are increasingly relying on crowdfunding campaigns to supplement tight school budgets for classroom equipment ranging from laptop computers to cleaning supplies, writes the Associated Press.

Contributions to education campaigns on DonorsChoose and GoFundMe jumped from about $31.2 million in 2010 to nearly $140 million last year, and the crowdfunding sites are on pace to beat that total this year. DonorsChoose had more than 50,000 campaigns live this back-to-school season, a milestone for the site, which exclusively hosts funding drives for school projects.
