Opinion: Why Is One-Click Mobile Giving So Hard?

A New York Times financial columnist looks at why the ability for people to donate spontaneously using mobile devices has lagged even as consumer purchases via smartphone or tablet get easier and faster.

In his Your Money column, Ron Lieber notes stumbling blocks to mobile giving, notably Apple's longstanding ban on in-app donations on its devices and charities' reliance for payment services on third-party providers that require credit-card data to be entered or registered to process transactions.

"As a result, we're often left with a handful of small companies that are gamely developing various mobile workarounds that require extra steps for donations. And you have to cast your lot (and your payment information) with unfamiliar entities," Mr. Lieber says.
