Orchestra and Opera in California's Capital to Unite

The Sacramento Philharmonic and the Sacramento Opera have announced plans to merge into a single arts organization, reports The Sacramento Bee.

The new Sacramento Region Performing Arts Alliance will begin operations on July 1, with a single board and a $1.8-million budget, about $300,000 less than that of the two predecessor groups combined. The orchestra and opera, which will retain their names, had been in merger talks for two years as the recession and major changes in audience behavior took a toll on both.
