Terry Fulmer, an expert in geriatrics, was appointed president of the John A. Hartford Foundation. She will take over from Corinne Rieder, who has retired after leading the foundation for 18 years.
Ms. Fulmer, a nurse, is best known for her research on the abuse and neglect of the elderly. She was most recently dean of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University, where she was also professor of public policy and urban affairs. She has held positions at New York, Yale, and the Harvard universities, and has served as the first nurse on the board of the American Geriatrics Society.
Her background is of special value to the foundation, which supports geriatric medicine, nursing, and social work.
"In 2012, the John A. Hartford Foundation launched an exciting new strategic plan that fundamentally reimagines the health-care delivery system to meet the needs of older adults and their families," said Ms. Fulmer. "We and our grantees are working hard to realize that vision as rapidly as possible by improving health-care practice in all settings, and I am committed to leading this effort forward," she said.
With assets of $549 million in 2013, the John A. Hartford Foundation is one of the 50 largest foundations listed on The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s survey of foundation giving. In 2013, it gave approximately $18 million in grants, a 2.4-percent increase from 2012.
