Quiet Giving Improves Snapchat's Image in L.A. Community

Image-messaging service Snapchat is quietly building a philanthropic profile in the beach-side Los Angeles community of Venice, where some locals blame the tech firm for driving up rents and changing the neighborhood's gritty character, the Los Angeles Times writes.

Founded in 2011 and backed by $1.4 billion in venture capital, Snapchat has more recently begun providing cash and employee volunteer time to arts, youths, and social-service projects in Venice, where it has snapped up office space. The company plans to spend $500,000 this year on community service, according to the Times.
