S.C. Sen. DeMint Leaves Seat to Head Conservative Nonprofit

Republican Sen. Jim DeMint announced Thursday that he is giving up his seat to become president of the Heritage Foundation, one of Washington's most prominent right-wing think tanks, The Washington Post reports. The 61-year-old South Carolinian, who was two years into his second term, said he was making the shift because "the conservative movement needs strong leadership in the battle of ideas."

Coming on the heels of a shakeup at another conservative policy group, FreedomWorks, and a few months after an internal struggle at the libertarian Cato Institute, Mr. DeMint's move is another sign of the GOP's insurgent Tea Party wing exerting greater influence in Republican policy and advocacy circles, according to Bloomberg.
