Southern California philanthropist Conrad Prebys has contributed $100 million to San Diego's Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute to translate laboratory work into new drugs and therapies for a variety of illnesses, U-T San Diego reports.
The gift is a latest in a series of large donations to Sanford-Burnham and other San Diego centers pursuing "translational medicine."
"Sanford-Burnham is the engine that is driving this 'bench-to-bedside' work. It's going to pay dividends for a long, long time," said Mr. Prebys, who made his fortune in property development and management. The center's name will be changed to the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in recognition of the gift. Mr. Prebys has donated more than $250 million since 2007, mostly for San Diego-area causes and projects, including $70 million last year.
