Schultz Family Foundation Hires First Outside President (Transitions)

Tyra Mariani, president and chief operating officer at New America, has been appointed president of the $128 million family foundation.

This Seattle grant maker was founded in 1996 by the billionaire and former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and his wife, Sheri, who has served as its president until now.

Ronald McDonald House Charities

Kelly Dolan, chief marketing and development officer, will become president and CEO on December 8.

She will follow Sheila Musolino, who plans to retire in December after five years in the top role. Musolino joined the organization in 2013 as chief operating officer after 30 years at the McDonald’s Corporation.

Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers

Ruth LaToison Ifill, CEO and founder of Aridai, a consulting firm in Washington, will now serve as interim president and CEO. She succeeds Madye Henson, who began leading the philanthropy group in April 2019.

More New CEOs

Crystal Crawford will be the next executive director of the Western Center on Law and Poverty. She is currently a program director at the California Wellness Foundation.

Ethan Felson has been hired as executive director of A Wider Bridge, an organization that builds support for Israel and its LGBTQ community. Felson previously served as co-executive director of the Israel Action Network.

Peter Kareiva, director of the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at the University of California at Los Angeles, has been named president and CEO of the Aquarium of the Pacific. He follows Jerry Schubel, who is retiring after 18 years at the aquarium.

Anna Klimala, executive director of the Miami Music Project, has been promoted to president.

Delphine Moralis will become chief executive of the European Foundation Centre in September, based in Brussels. She is currently secretary general of Terre des Hommes International Federation.

Joslyn Pettway, acting CEO of Covenant Community Care since September, will continue in the position permanently. Prior to her interim role, Pettway was chief operating officer. She succeeded Paul Propson, who stepped down after 12 years to become CEO of Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan.

Other Notable Appointments

Mark Carter, senior director of development for the National Academy of Sciences, has joined Virginia Tech as a principal-gifts officer.

Rachael Kagan has been named director of communications and public affairs at Blue Shield of California Foundation. Most recently, she was director of communications at the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Bill Nelson, principal at Smoky Valley High School, has joined Bethany College as director of development.

Leona Thomas, founder of Enabling Investments, a management and technology consulting firm, is now chief technology officer at Benefits Data Trust. She succeeds Sam Rastin, interim chief technology officer, who will now return to his position as director of software engineering.

Departures

Christi Kay, president and CEO of HealthMPowers, will retire after 20 years with the health charity. She has led the group since 2004.

Mandy Murphy, chief marketing and strategy officer at PeacePlayers, has stepped down.
