A nonprofit philanthropic consultancy in Seattle has launched a fellowship program aimed at creating a pipeline for people of color to enter the overwhelmingly white giving world, writes The Seattle Times.
Philanthropy Northwest’s Momentum Fellowship offers mentorship, training, and short-term, salaried foundation jobs to prepare people from underrepresented communities for careers in the field. The organization advises corporations and foundations on giving.
A recent study found that minorities represent only 8 percent of foundation CEOs and 17 percent of senior staff. “There’s not a pipeline for people of color to enter the field of philanthropy,” said Sindhu Knotz, a foundation liaison with Philanthropy Northwest. If organizations don’t start reflecting the increasingly diverse U.S. population, she said, “they will become irrelevant.”
