Smithsonian Tops Crowdfunding Goal for Armstrong Space Suit

The National Air and Space Museum raised $720,000 on Kickstarter to conserve the space suit Neil Armstrong wore on his historic moon walk, wrapping up a campaign that surpassed the Smithsonian's goal by more than 40 percent, writes the Associated Press.

The 30-day crowdfunding effort, the first for a Smithsonian institution, easily exceeded the initial $500,000 goal set to finance the cost of preserving and displaying Armstrong's suit and creating a digital 3D scan of it. The additional money will be used to help conserve astronaut Alan Shepard's suit from the first American manned space flight and to support a new "Destination Moon" gallery, set to open in 2020.
