A dozen states that launched investigations of alleged sales of fetal organs by Planned Parenthood clinics have closed the inquiries without finding evidence of illegal tissue transactions, according to NPR.
Republican governors, attorneys general, and lawmakers across the country demanded such reviews following the release last summer of secretly shot videos of Planned Parenthood officials discussing tissue donations for medical research. The organization has denied profiting from the tissue program, which would violate federal law. This week a Texas grand jury convened to investigate Planned Parenthood instead indicted two of the anti-abortion activists who made the videos.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said state agencies are still investigating Planned Parenthood, and Arkansas and Louisiana have ongoing inquiries. All three states have sought to block government funding for the organization, prompting a series of legal battles.
