Silicon Valley billionaire Larry Ellison has donated $200 million to the University of Southern California to establish a center for cancer research, Bloomberg reports. The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine will gather physicists, mathematicians, engineers, and other researchers to address fundamental questions about cancer, said David Agus, a USC professor of medicine and engineering who will lead the center.
Mr. Ellison co-founded Oracle Corporation and is the database company’s chairman and chief technology officer. His foundation gave $100 million in 2014 for efforts to eradicate polio. The new donation will largely fund a building for the medical institute, which Dr. Agus said is slated to open in two-and-a-half years. The gift will also support residency programs and research projects set to begin immediately.
